Dingle - Mary's Church
Ireland
Dingle (An Daingean) in County Kerry is the only town on the Dingle peninsula. In Medieval times Dingle was an important port. Nowadays it is a centre of tourism. St. Mary’s Church is the Roman-Catholic parish church of Dingle. It was founded in 1862 as a Neo-Gothic church. The restoration of the church was rather radical and highly controversial – to cite archiseek: “The arcades were demolished in one of the most radical reordering schemes to have been executed in Ireland. The project also saw the demolition of the exterior walls to below the original clerstory level, and, most notably, of the attic and upper ranges of the west elevation.”
