Griffiths Island walk in Port Fairy
Victoria

Panorama from Griffiths Island across one arm of the Moyne river in Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia. Griffiths island at the mouth of the Moyne River was named after John Griffiths who purchased the island in 1835. Early in the 19th century a whaling station was established on the island but not long after Port Fairy became a major point of entry for immigrants and trade.

Today, Port Fairy is a scenic coastal town 289 kilometres west of Melbourne and slowly recovering populations of southern right whales visiting this stretch of coast during the winter months have become a popular tourist attraction.
