Once owned by Brigham Young, the land that became Liberty Park was acquired by Salt Lake City in 1881 and landscaped to become a public resource with recreational facilities, trails, as well as an onsite aviary. The park is home to a firework celebration following the annual Pioneer Day every July 24th.
After a particularly heavy snow and frigid weather, much of the Liberty Park pond has frozen over. The water fowl gather at the water's edge and swim around the remaining open water. A resident feeds the birds bread from a parch bench at the shore.
