A 200' aerial view overlooking Monticello, Utah. Located at an elevation of 7,021 feet at the base of the Abajo Mountains, the town was founded in 1887 & has a population of 1,824 as of 2020. Uranium deposits discovered nearby led to Monticello being an important source for the Manhattan Project during World War II. On August 13, 1956, a natural gas pipeline explosion at the Lariat Cafe killed 16 & injured 30.
