Murbach Abbey, Murbach, Alsace, Interior 1
Alsace
Murbach Abbey was a very important and rich Benedictine monastery in the Alsace, near Guebwiller, just below the highest summit of the Vosges - The Grand Ballon. The monastery was founded in the year 727. In 1228 the abbey gained the imperial immediacy. In 1758 the abbey was moved from Murbach to Guebwiller. The Romanesque church St. Leodgard and the abbey were devasteted and plundered by peasants during the French Revolution. Much of the church was destroyed. Only the quire, the transept and two steeples survived to the present day. Nowadays the site of the former nave is used as a graveyard.
