A proposta de 1878 pela sociedade Eiffel para a Ponte Luis I só contemplava um tabuleiro ao nivel da Ribeira. Em 1879 o governo lança novo concurso, e sai vencedor o sócio de Eiffel Theophile Seyrig e a ponte é construída entre 1881 e 1886
