Alcântara é um município do estado brasileiro do Maranhão. Integra a Região Metropolitana de São Luis. Sua população estimada em 2004 era de 22.165 habitantes. Possui uma área de 1495,6 km².A zona do atual município era habitada por índios tupinambás, numa aldeia chamada Tapuitapera. Os franceses estabeleceram-se aqui no início do século XVII sendo expulsos pelos portugueses. A povoação foi elevada a vila de Santo António de Alcântara em 1648 e foi durante o período colonial um importante centro agrícola e comercial. No século XIX a cidade entra num período de decadência. Fica também perto desta cidade a ilha do Cajual, um importante sítio arqueológico do Maranhão. A presença de fósseis de espécies que também viveram na África pode comprovar que a África e a América do Sul já foram um só continente. A cidade também é muito conhecida pelos seus doces de espécie. A festa do Divino Espírito Santo ("festa do Divino") é bastante difundida no estado, já que são aproximadamente 15 dias de festa durante a qual são servidos de graça "licores" e doces.

These four were labeled the world's fastest developing large economies in the year 2001.Brazil is known for three things: amazingly beautiful women, carnival, and Pele -- King of Football, Athlete of the Century, football ambassador of the world and a declared national treasure.Brazillians can tell foreigners a mile away, by the way their hips move. Samba is built into the soul of brazil and carnival is when it bursts out into twenty-four hour undying explosions of sound on every street.This picture of mask diving at the Taipus reefs makes me shed hot and salty tears all over my calendar, which is set on "January" right now.Text by Steve Smith.
