At the upper portion of Scoggins Wash just below the junction with the Chinle Trail, the view opens up and you begin to see more of the grand sandstone cliffs ahead. Due east, the West Temple rises to 7810 feet, about 3600 feet higher than our current position. To the right and south, slightly lower in elevation, Mount Kinesava forms a long vertical wall.
Hiking in winter is a great way to avoid the crowds and heat of summer. However, hikers should still carry water as well as take precautions to be able to handle emergencies if they arise. We used two cars in order to hike one-way from Coalpits to Scoggins to the Chinle trail and saw no other hikers on the ten mile trek. Lucky for us, the only other group to hike the same trail later that day found the wallet one of our party had dropped half way along the route.
