The ruins of Auchindoun Castle
Scotland

Auchindoun Castle is a 15th century fortification with a violent history. Built on the site of a prehistoric hill fort, it comprises the ruins of an L-Plan tower house, surrounded by walls reinforced with large buttresses and defensive earthwork ramparts.

In 1592, Auchindoun was attacked and burned in an act of revenge for a similar attack on nearby Corgaff Castle several years earlier. The episode is recalled in a traditional ballard called 'The Burning of Auchindoun'. By 1725 the castle was reported as derelict.
