With an area of 19 hectares, the Main Stadium, constructed for tThe World Games 2009 Kaohsiung, was designed and inspected upon completion by the internationally renowned architect, Toyo Ito. Unlike traditionally designed stadiums, the Main Stadium is the world’s first arena with an opening toproof (**). The spiral-shaped structure and the solar photoelectric panels on the top of the roof make the stadium an aesthetic combination of art and sports, as well as bringing in energy for sustainable development. As the sun shines on the stadium, it looks just like a giant spiral dragon welcoming top athletes from all over the world to the green and ecological city of northern Kaohsiung.
The Main Stadium is located at the intersection of Jhonghai Road and Jyunsiao Road in Zuoying District, and visitors may arrive by taking MRT and getting off at the Main StadiumWorld Games Station. There are recreational and cultural attractions in the surrounding areas of the stadium, including the Banpingshan Ecological Park, Lianchihtan (Lotus Pond) Scenic Area, Kaohsiung Confucius Temple, and Old Fongshan Old TownCity in Zuoying District. The Wannian Festival held at the Lotus Pond every year is a major folklore and religious festival in Kaohsiung. The beautiful mountain and lake views at during different seasons and the holding of a variety of folklore festivals have already made the entire lake area the most ecological and cultural flavored area in Kaohsiung. Northern Kaohsiung has become a healthy and sustainable city of LOHAS ever since the stadium joined with concepts of health and sports.
