The bristlecone pines are believed to grow older than any other single living thing, living to a ripe old age of up to thousands of years. The needles on the branches are thick like a bristle and dark green. The newest cones appear at the ends of the branches bright red-brown against the needles, turning a darker brown with age.
This old one rises above the Ramparts Trail at Cedar Breaks National Monument and appears to be in its twilight years with a bit of greenery that looks scarce compared to its immense gnarled and twisted body.
