Church of Santa Maria de Marvila, Santarem
Portugal

The building of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção de Marvila is a reconstruction of the early 16th century, carried out by the impulse of King Manuel I, superimposed on the pre-existing Gothic structure. Manueline's languages are well expressed throughout the church, especially on the façade portal. The interior of the temple features three naves, divided by full, classic arches that are based on thick columns with animated “claw-winding” bases and surmounted by beautiful Ionian capitals. The walls are covered with tiles of various colors and checkered blue and white, dated 1617, 1620, 1635 and 1639.

Located in a neighborhood of the old Islamic medina, it probably results from the transformation of the largest mosque into a Christian parish headquarters, from the time of the reconquest of Afonso Henriques. There is little left of the primitive Gothic church.
