Convent of Santa Clara, main chapel, Vila do Conde
Portugal
Gothic conventual church with a cruciform plant built in 1318-1526 at the initiative of D. Afonso Sanches, bastard son of D. Dinis, would be completed and partially remodeled in the 16th and 17th centuries. It has a large transept covered with wood and a triple-faced buttress with a vaulted polygonal plant, opening the main portal on the North side facade. The Chapel of the Founders, in Manueline style, was built in the first quarter of the 16th century at the initiative of Abbess D. Isabel de Castro, to house the tombs of the founders of the Convent. According to the foundation's deed - what the nuns called "the will of the lords" - the Convent of Santa Clara was intended for the protection of the poor noblemen. The building started by D. Afonso Sanches and D.Tareja, was still incomplete (although inhabited) by the death of both; was completed by his son D. João Afonso. D.Tareja de Meneses, maternal granddaughter of D. Sancho IV of Castile, was descended by her father from D. Sancho I of Portugal and his lover "Ribeirinha" who received from D. Sancho I the landlord of Vila do Conde, having D. Tareja stayed with the landlord of Vila do Conde.
