Historic bridges over the River Conwy
Wales

The Conwy Suspension Bridge was constructed between 1822 and 1826 to cross the River Conwy. It was built by Thomas Telford as part of a project to improve the road between London and Holyhead, the main sea crossing point to Dublin. The distinguished civil engineer was also responsible for the Menai Strait bridge, on the same route.

The design of the bridge, with its crenellated towers, is sympathetic to the adjacent medieval castle, into which some of the cables are anchored. Two more linkspans have since been added. The wrought iron tubular railway bridge, built by Robert Stephenson, was opened in 1849. The road bridge was opened in 1958.
