Igreja da Graça, Fachada, Evora
Portugal

They were built between 1537 and 1546, under the responsibility of the architect Miguel de Arruda and artistic collaboration by Nicolau Canterene (windows of the main chancel of the church, tomb of the Bishop of Évora, D. Afonso de Portugal, currently in the city museum).

The church, the pantheon of Casa Vimioso, has on its facade an unprecedented composition of Renaissance and Mannerist elements, with emphasis on Meninos da Graça, statues of giants symbolizing the four parts of the world and the universal power of D. João III. These figures are linked to several popular stories.

In the Convent, the cloister, the primitive refectory and the stairways covered with tiles from the late 17th century stand out.

Its façade is essentially scenographic, with great iconological complexity, celebrating the status of King D. João III, and the overall design of the façade seems to derive from the first illustrated editions of Vitruvius by César Cesarino (1521). In Manueline times, classicism is used here as propaganda and evocation of D. João III as emperor.
