Igrejinha da Pampulha - Paineis de Portinari- Igreja Sao Francisco de Assis
Brazil

Church of Saint Francis of Assis, known as "Igrejinha da Pampulha", in reference to the neighborhood where it is located - Pampulha, was built between 1943 and 1944, but was opened to the public only in April 1959, due to differences between clerics about the painting of St. Francis of Assis produced by Candido Portinari. The architectural design of the church belongs to Oscar Niemeyer. Here I emphasized the side where the panels of Portinari, object of controversy, stay.

The "Igrejinha da Pampulha" composes the Niemeyer's project to the neighborhood Pampulha, created from request of the then mayor of Belo Horizonte, Juscelino Kubitschek. It is considered the masterpiece of the architectural complex of Pampulha. The curved lines of the church seduced artists and architects, but offended the cramped cultural environment of the city, so that the ecclesiastical authorities did not allow, for many years, the consecration of the chapel because of its unusual form and due to the panel of PORTINARI, where, near to St. Francis of Assis, we see a dog representing a wolf and due to the unrealistic form with that St. Francis was portrayed, with disproportionate hands. The church remained for fourteen years forbidden to worship. In the eyes of Archbishop Dom Antonio dos Santos Cabral, the church was just a shed.

Despite the problems, over the years, the work of Niemeyer, inaugurated in 1944, maintains the refinement of the frescoes, tiles and paintings of Candido Portinari (1903-1962).

More About Brazil

Here's your soundtrack. Okay, maybe they're not exactly brazillian but their music is awesome and their live shows legendary. Now, Brazil covers almost half of South America and its Amazon rainforest is the world's largest jungle... which is rapidly getting cut down. The country is basically one giant botanical garden with some bangin' cities on its edges.Brazil was colonized in 1808 by the royal court of Portugal, which was fleeing Napolean's troops. They didn't stay long, and Brazil won its independence in 1822.Its biggest city, Sao Paulo, is the financial hub of South America. Brazil is the "b" in BRIC -- Brazil, Russia, India and China. These four were labeled the world's fastest developing large economies in the year 2001.Brazil is known for three things: amazingly beautiful women, carnival, and Pele -- King of Football, Athlete of the Century, football ambassador of the world and a declared national treasure.Brazillians can tell foreigners a mile away, by the way their hips move. Samba is built into the soul of brazil and carnival is when it bursts out into twenty-four hour undying explosions of sound on every street. This picture of mask diving at the Taipus reefs makes me shed hot and salty tears all over my calendar, which is set on "January" right now.Text by Steve Smith.
