Napier is located in Hawke’s Bay. The neighbouring city Hasting and Napier are commonly called “The Twin Cities” or “The Bay Cities”. Napier is an important port for the export of wool, wine and many fruits. Large parts of Napier were destroyed in the Hawke’s Bay earthquake in 1931. Many of the buildings in the centre of Napier were rebuilt in Art Deco style. So Napier itself is a major tourist attraction, celebrating the 1930s. The cathedral is hosting two cathedrae: the one of the Bishop of Waiapu and the one of the Bishop of Aotearoa – Te Pihopa o Aotearoa. The Maori Memorial Chapel is located in the east of the cathedral. Being closest to the western side of the dateline Napier Cathedral is the first to greet every new morning.
