The viewpoint of São Salvador do Mundo is located on the left bank of the Douro river in the Douro Demarcated Region, an area classified as World Cultural Heritage. The place is constituted by an imposing granite cone with an altitude of 493 meters and with a steep slope for the river.
The viewpoint of S. Salvador do Mundo has as its main mark the valley of the Douro river and it’s riverside, creating a landscape of great beauty, complemented by the huge steep and rugged slopes that contrast with the vineyards, olive groves and orchards. At the bottom of the mountain you can see the Valeira Dam and the historic “Cachão da Valeira”, famous for being the site of the death of Baron of Forrester. From here you can also find some villages and other viewpoints that give color to some of the highest points of the mountains.
Considered the largest sanctuary of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, it is constituted by a set of chapels that stand along the hill, dating back to the oldest to the XVI century. In the last decades of the XVI century, the “Ermo” was inhabited by Frei Gaspar da Piedade, who after having traveled in Rome and Palestine, returned and built a chapel where he deposited a relic from the East, a bone of the arm of S. Jerónimo. The various archaeological remains on the site testify to the existence of human occupation at least since the pre-Roman period.
