Cathedral of Porto, Cloister terrace
Portugal

In the Gothic cloister Sé do Porto (12th - 13th centuries), started in 1385, during the 17th century Sede Vacante period, changes were made to its upper structure, which included: between 1639 and 1671 the works in the upper part the cloister, then called "balconies"; and the construction, in the same area, of a chapel of the invocation of Santa Cecília.

In 1733 the tile panels of the upper gallery of this cloister would be painted by Vital Rifarto who also painted those of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in the south gallery of the cloister in 1738. These panels are inspired by the most varied subjects, of Christian or mythological theme.

I II III - Triptych

In the middle of the central panel, rising from the clouds, Divine Providence. On the left side Wisdom and on the right Clemency. The side panels represent everyday life, highlighting the Grace of Mercy and that of Magnanimity.

IV - Medallion

Mythological scene: Neptune, wielding his trident, abandons the shell-shaped cart, pulled by two pisciform half-body horses on the waves, and lets himself be led by a winged figure, possibly Amphitrite.

V - Garden Scene

In the center of the panel is a fountain, with water splashes. On the left side, a lady leaning on a simple cane is greeted by a guitar player. On the right side, another lady, with a fan closed in her right hand, points to a palace, which can be seen in the background. In the central medallion of the foot-wheel, a beggar is taken by a child and followed by a dog.

VI - Hunting Scene

Two hunters, mounted on horseback, chase an ostrich, which is owned by dogs. To complete the scene, a hunting boy blowing on a horn.

VII VIII IX - Triptych

It represents themes of mythological inspiration: Diana the Huntress, the Abduction of Amphitrite and finally Diana Amorosa. These panels are separated from the former and the latter by medallions that display characters in court robes.

X - Riverside Landscape

Two fishermen with fishing accessories are stationed on the river bank. In the foreground is a castle and, in the background, some villages. Several trees complete the landscape, next to which two men sit.
