长春市南湖新村，东眺威尼斯花园，南望大通花园，西邻长春前进农场，吉林东光集团，北靠南湖公园；她是一座居民社区。
吉林省长春市朝阳区南湖新村湖东社区创建于2000年5月，是全省首家成立的社区。社区面积24万平方米，辖80余栋居民楼，4174户，15712口人。几年来，湖东社区在区委、区政府和街道党工委的正确领导下，紧紧围绕着社区建设，积极开展公民道德建设、精神文明创建和争创节约型社区活动，推动了社区多项工作的开展，并取得了可喜成绩。几年来，湖东社区有三十多项工作被评为国家、省市区的先进单位，连续多年被国家民政部和吉林省、长春市委授予先进基层党组织、文明社区、社区建设先进单位等荣誉称号。2001年以来，国家领导人姜春云、费孝通、司马义艾买提、顾秀莲等分别来社区视察，2004年5月15日党中央总书记胡锦涛到湖东社区视察时，对湖东社区党建工作和精神文明建设工作给予了充分肯定。
