「百丈山人智禪師名懷海。長樂王氏子，早歲離俗，三學該練，長慕禪法，每思遊訪，會馬祖蒞止南康，乃往謁之。師親近馬祖時，有一日馬祖一喝，耳聾三日而得傳授心印。百丈日常言語簡樸，而於佛法義理精通徹底，精神敏捷，容貌溫和，頗厭聲名而自晦跡。但其道譽自然流布，道俗於洪州新吳界大雄山建一伽藍寺，請施師為開山第一祖，此即百丈山人智聖禪寺。
