The Kaibab Plateu has frequent thunderstorms in summer and consequently many naturally ignited forest fires. Forest Service policy now allows some fires to burn, concentrating its suppression efforts on developed areas. The area shown here burned a forest of ponderosa pine and Engelmann spruce about ten years previously.
