Kelenderis Nekropol Alani Aydincik Vr Mersin 6d5
Turkey
It is located in downtown Aydıncık District, Mersin. Conclusive information regarding the original founders of the settlement has yet to be found. The oldest samples of ceramics revealed in excavations are dated to the end of the 8th and 7thcenturies BC. The last settlement layer, on the other hand, is the floor mosaic that could be dated to the 6th century BC. According to written sources, the earliest examples of coins minted in the name of the city, which had been a settlement for a much longer time, dated back to the 5th century BC. Apollodoros, a writer from antiquity, indicates that Kalenderis was founded by Sandokos, who came from Syria. Kalenderis was in its prime during the 5th and 4th centuries BC. Kalenderis, which came under the rule of Byzantine, and later, of Seljuk Dynasty during the Middle Age, secured its position as an important port in transportation between Anatolia and Cyprus from the Ottoman Period till the beginning of the 20th century. Because of such reasons as the formation of Mersin Port, this port started to lose its former importance. The port bath, a theatre, and the necropolis area are among the remains of the antique city.
