Old Train and depot in downtown Palmer Alaska
Alaska

Originally just a train station on a rail line that served coal mines in the area, Palmer became one of the very few communities in Alaska with agriculture as its economic base. In 1935 it was the focus of a Federal Emergency Relief Project where the government transported in families and gave them 40 acres of land to farm. Today Palmer is still an important agricultural center in Alaska and it is the site of Alaska’s annual state fair.

The locomotive in the panorama has stood for years in downtown Palmer. It stands next to the regular tracks which have fallen into disuse and may soon disappear.
