Pierre Brunehaut (megalith)
Belgium

The Pierre Brunehaut (or Brunehault) also called Celtic Stone is a megalith dating from the recent Neolithic, located at the crossroads of the "Six Chemins" at Hollain (Western Hainaut), an entity of the town of Brunehaut, near the Roman road Bavay-Tournai.

This Grandglise sandstone menhir (upper sandstone of the Landes) is the largest megalith erected in Belgium and would weigh about 25 tons.
Its dimensions are impressive : 4,20 m height above ground on the north side and 3,50 m on the south side, but more than 6 m from an ancient drawing ; 2,90 m to 3,20 m wide depending the places and 60 cm maximum thickness.
Several ancient documents, including an unsigned engraving of 1773 shows the monument in an inclined position. Around 1819, the authorities made him straighten. The menhir, which are attached various legends, is a trapezoidal slab laid on edge, a Zeupire in the jargon of archaeologists.
Surrounded by four Italian poplars, the site is easily spotted in the area. The stone is oriented north-south. It is classified since March 15, 1934.

The shot was taken in april 2012, in the beginning of the evening. Panorama made in HDR version (enfuse).

More About Belgium

Belgium is a country in northwest Europe. Founding member of the European Union, it covers an area of 30,528 square kilometres and has a population of about 10.7 million. From the end of the Middle Ages until the 17th century, it was a prosperous centre of commerce and culture. Upon its independence, Belgium eagerly participated in the Industrial Revolution and, at the end of the nineteenth century, possessed several colonies in Africa. Today, Belgium's strongly globalized economy and its transportation infrastructure are integrated with the rest of Europe. Its location at the heart of a highly industrialized region helps made it 2007 the world's 15th largest trading nation. Cultural life is nowadays concentrated within each language community and a variety of barriers have made a shared cultural sphere less pronounced. Anyway, the region corresponding to today's Belgium has seen the flourishing of major artistic movements that have had tremendous influence on European art and culture.
