Roman Catholic Church, the sanctuary of Catholics who settled in Mersin during the Ottoman Period and still have active members, is located on the Uray Avenue of Akdeniz District. The church was originally planned in 1853 during the reign of Sultan Abdulmecid I, but the construction only started in 1892, and the church was finally completed in 1898. It was turned into a “Cathedral” in 1991 under the direct orders of the Pope. It is the first of the two cathedrals existing in Turkey.
