The building of the former prison was erected by the architect Staubert in 1830. Due to its unusual round shape, it got the name "Bottle", and, according to legend, this is where the expression "don't go into the bottle" came from. A progressive penitentiary system operated for imprisoned sailors: while serving their sentence, they mastered a new profession and received a salary that accumulated until their release. Later, administrative premises for the needs of the maritime department were located here.
