Site of the Shipwreck - Ship San Pedro de Alcantara 1
Portugal

The ship San Pedro de Alcantara, had left Callao, Lima in Peru and was heading to Cadiz in Spain, having made a stopover for repairs during 4 months in Rio de Janeiro. But, on the night of February 2, 1786, due to navigation error and, possibly due to overweight, the ship San Pedro de Alcantara sank near the Papôa rock, in Peniche, in one of the most important events in the tragic-maritime history of this region. The accident motivated a huge operation to recover goods and equipment, carried out by professional divers from various European countries paid by the Spanish Crown. Almost all of this precious cargo, such as: 150 tons of gold and silver coins and 600 tons of copper, 100 tons of quinquina, 6.5 tons of cocoa. as well as the ship's hull, were rescued from the bottom of the sea. This operation took about three years. Of the 400 passengers it carried, 128 died. The impact of these operations lasted several years and left deep marks on the local population. The valuable goods and equipment were transported in oxcarts to Lisbon and from there to Spain.
