Virgin River near the Entrance to the Zion Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah
Zion National Park
The Zion Narrows is a three and half mile long section of the canyon on the North Fork of the Virgin River in the Zion National Park. The Virgin River begins its journey through the canyon near Navajo Lake at approximately 9200 feet above sea level. The River enters the canyon and as the river drops the walls of the canyon reach a height of over 1300 feet with the canyon walls only from 40 to 100 feet apart. The River runs from wall to wall in the canyon and there is always a danger of flash flooding. Rains many miles upstream can send walls of water down the canyon causing very dangerous conditions. The hike trough the canyon from the top to the entrance in the National Park is about 16 very difficult miles. In the road accessible portion of the Park, the canyon floor is about ¼ mile wide.
