援中港溼地以沿海養殖漁塭和潮溝的紅樹林為主，總面積廣達二百多公頃，因鄰近軍港而管制嚴密，不受人為干擾，鳥類種類繁多，生態資源豐富，是台灣西部海岸河口溪重要溼地之一。市府爭取於典寶溪南側濕地劃設為援中港濕地公園，面積約29.41公頃，落實溼地生態棲地復育及開發管制，目標著重於復育紅樹林，強調原生樹種的保育，也兼具防洪、景觀遊憩、生態教育等功能。
